DTC Troubleshooting: B1168

DTC B1168:
 Gauge Control Module Lost Communication with the ECM (ENG Message)
  1. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) and then back to ON (II).
  1. Wait for at least 6 seconds.
  1. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC B1168 indicated?
YES -
Go to Step 5 .
NO -
Intermittent failure. The system is OK at this time. Check for loose or poor connections.■
  1. Check for DTCs with the HDS.
Are all of DTCs B1168, B1170, B1178, B1183 and B1187 also indicated at the same time?
YES -
NO -
Go to Step 6 .
  1. Check for PGM-FI system DTCs with the HDS.
Is any DTCs indicated?
YES -
Go to the indicated troubleshooting.■
NO -
Go to Step 7 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Disconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.
  1. Disconnect the ECM connector A (44P) *1 (49P) *2 .
    *1:
    R18A2 engine and K20Z4 engine
    *2:
    L13Z1 engine

  1. Connect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 19 and body ground with jumper wires.

  1. Check for continuity between the ECM connector A (44P) *1 (49P) *2 terminals No. 36 *1 (No. 3) *2 and No. 37 *1 (No. 4) *2 and body ground individually.

    R18A2 engine and K20Z4 engine
    *2:
    L13Z1 engine

Are there continuity?
YES -
Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM ( R18A2 engine , L13Z1 engine ), and recheck. If DTC B1168 is indicated again, replace the gauge control module (tach).■
NO -
Repair an open in the wire.■
