Power Relay Test

Use this chart to identify the type of relay, then do the test listed for it.

Normally-open type (Except PGM-FI main relay 1, 2, Rear window defogger relay, Radiator fan relay, Condenser fan relay and blower motor relay, Fuel heater relay, Intake shutter relay, PTC relay 1, 2, 3)
Check for continuity between the terminals.
  • There should be continuity between the No. 1 and No. 2 terminals when power and ground are connected to the No. 4 and No. 3 terminals.
  • There should be no continuity between the No. 1 and No. 2 terminals when power is disconnected.

ISV relay, Fuel heater relay, PTC 1 relay, PTC 2 relay, PTC 3 relay
  1. Disconnect the under-hood fuse/relay box connector J (10P) and K (5P).
  1. At the under-hood fuse/relay box side, do the following test.
    ISV relay:
    • Connect power to the J No. 9, and ground to the J No. 3 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the J No. 4 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the J No. 9, and ground from the J No. 3 terminals. There should be no voltage between the J No. 4 terminal and the body ground.
    Fuel heater relay:
    • Connect power to the J No. 8, and ground to the J No. 7 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the K No. 5 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the J No. 8, and ground from the J No. 7 terminals. There should be no voltage between the K No. 5 terminal and the body ground.
    PTC 1 relay:
    • Connect power to the J No. 1, and ground to the J No. 10 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the K No. 4 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the J No. 1, and ground from the J No. 10 terminals. There should be no voltage between the K No. 4 terminal and the body ground.
    PTC 2 relay:
    • Connect power to the J No. 1, and ground to the J No. 6 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the K No. 3 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the J No. 1, and ground from the J No. 6 terminals. There should be no voltage between the K No. 3 terminal and the body ground.
    PTC 3 relay:
    • Connect power to the J No. 1, and ground to the J No. 2 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the K No. 2 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the J No. 1, and ground from the J No. 2 terminals. There should be no voltage between the K No. 2 terminal and the body ground.

PGM-FI main relay 1, 2, Rear window defogger relay
  1. Disconnect the under-hood fuse/relay box connector D (20P).
  1. At the under-hood fuse/relay box side, do the following test.
    PGM-FI main relay:
    • Connect the No. 20 terminal and the body ground. There should be battery voltage between the No. 17 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect the No. 20 terminal from the body ground. There should be no voltage between the No. 17 terminal and the body ground.
    PGM-FI main relay 2:
    • Connect the No. 20 terminal and the body ground. There should be battery voltage between the No. 8, No. 9, No. 18, No. 19 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect the No. 20 terminal from the body ground. There should be no voltage between the No. 8, No. 9, No. 18, No. 19 terminal and the body ground.
    Rear window defogger relay:
    • Connect power to the No. 18, and ground to the No. 4 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the No. 3 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the No. 18, and ground from the No. 4 terminals. There should be no voltage between the No. 3 terminal and the body ground.

Radiator fan relay, Condenser fan relay, Blower motor relay
  1. Disconnect the under-hood fuse/relay box connector E (20P).
  1. At the under-hood fuse/relay box side, do the following test.
    Radiator fan relay:
    • Connect power to the No. 15, and ground to the No. 4 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the No. 11 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the No. 15, and ground from the No. 4 terminals. There should be no voltage between the No. 11 terminal and the body ground.
    Condenser fan relay:
    • Connect power to the No. 15, and ground to the No. 16 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the No. 13 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the No. 15, and the No. 16 terminals. There should be no voltage between the No. 13 terminal and the body ground.
    Blower motor relay:
    • Connect power to the No. 6, and ground to the No. 1 terminals. There should be battery voltage between the No. 3 terminal and the body ground.
    • Disconnect power from the No. 6, and ground from the No. 1 terminals. There should be no voltage between the No. 3 terminal and the body ground.

Five-terminal type
Check for continuity between the terminals.
  • There should be continuity between the No. 1 and No. 2 terminals when power and ground are connected to the No. 5 and No. 3 terminals.
  • There should be continuity between the No. 1 and No. 4 terminals when power is disconnected.
