DTC Troubleshooting: P242F (187)

DTC P242F:
 DPF Restriction Ash Accumulation
Special Tools Required
NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and review the general troubleshooting information.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Record all freeze data with the HDS.
  1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  1. Start the engine, and keep idling until the engine coolant temperature becomes 70 °C (158 °F).
  1. Test-drive under these conditions:
    • Engine coolant temperature (ECT SENSOR 1) above 70 °C (158 °F)
    • On flat route
    • Transmission in 2nd gear
    • Vehicle speed above 60 km/h (38 mph)
    • Drive about 30 seconds or more
  1. Test-drive the vehicle for 20 seconds in the range of these recorded freeze data parameters:
    • VEHICLE SPEED
    • ENGINE SPEED
  1. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P242F in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate FAILED?
YES -
Go to Step 8 .
NO -
If the screen indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the DPF differential pressure sensor and the ECM. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to Step 3 and recheck.
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Check for a looseness exhaust pressure lines between the DPF differential pressure sensor and the DPF.
Are the lines OK?
YES -
Go to Step 9 .
NO -
Reconnect the exhaust pressure line(s), then go to Step 27 .
  1. Disconnect the rear exhaust pressure line between the DPF differential pressure sensor and the DPF.
  1. Apply vacuum to rear exhaust pressure line (A).
Does it hold vacuum?
YES -
Check for a restricted between the DPF differential pressure sensor and the DPF, then go to Step 26 .
NO -
Go to Step 12 .
  1. Close the rear exhaust pressure line of the DPF side.
  1. Apply vacuum to rear exhaust pressure line.
Does it hold vacuum?
YES -
Go to Step 14 .
NO -
Repair the rear exhaust pressure line, then go to Step 26 .

  1. Disconnect the front exhaust pressure line (A) from the DPF differential pressure sensor (B).
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Check the DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
Is there about 0−2 kPa (0−0.02 kgf/cm 2 , 0−0.29 psi)?
YES -
Go to Step 17 .
NO -

  1. Connect the pressure side of vacuum pump (A) and the gauge 600 kPa to the DPF differential pressure sensor port (B) as shown.
    NOTE:
    • Do not connect the vacuum side of vacuum pump to the DPF differential pressure sensor port (B).
    • Do not connect the vacuum pump to the DPF differential pressure sensor port (C).
  1. Slowly apply 40 kPa (0.41 kgf/cm 2 , 5.8 psi) of pressure to the sensor.
  1. Check the DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
Is there about 30−50 kPa (0.30−0.51 kgf/cm 2 , 4.35−7.25 psi)?
YES -
Go to Step 20 .
NO -
  1. Slowly apply 80 kPa (0.81 kgf/cm 2 , 11.6 psi) of pressure to the sensor.
  1. Check the DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
Is there about 70−90 kPa (0.71−0.92 kgf/cm 2 , 10.15−13.05 psi)?
YES -
Go to Step 22 .
NO -
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Connect all exhaust pressure lines.
  1. Start the engine.
Is the result OK?
YES -
Go to Step 28 .
NO -
Follow the result, then go to Step 26 .
  1. Reconnect all exhaust pressure lines.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Reset the ECM with the HDS.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
If DTC P242F indicated?
YES -
Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the DPF differential pressure sensor and the ECM, then go to Step 1 .
NO -
Go to Step 33 .
  1. Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P242F in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate PASSED?
YES -
Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs were indicated in Step 32 , go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.■
NO -
If the screen indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the DPF differential pressure sensor and the ECM, then go to Step 1 . If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to Step 29 .
