DTC Troubleshooting: P0653 (134)

DTC P0653:
Sensor Reference Voltage B Circuit High Voltage
NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and review the general troubleshooting information.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0653 indicated?
YES -
Go to Step 4 .
NO -
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the CMP sensor, the IMRC position sensor, the A/C pressure sensor, the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor, the DPF differential pressure sensor (with DPF system), and the ECM.■
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 2 minutes.
  1. Disconnect ECM connectors No. 1 (96P) and No. 2 (58P).
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Measure voltage between body ground and ECM connector No. 1 terminals No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 (with DPF system), No. 29, and ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 13 individually.
Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Repair short to power in the wire between the ECM connector terminals and these sensors, then go to Step 20 .
  • CMP sensor and ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 29.
  • IMRC position sensor and ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 3.
  • Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor and ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 4.
  • DPF differential pressure sensor and ECM connector No. 1 terminal No. 5 (with DPF system).
  • A/C pressure sensor and ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 13.
NO -
Go to Step 8 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Disconnect the connectors from these sensors:
    • CMP sensor
    • IMRC position sensor
    • Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor
    • A/C pressure sensor
    • DPF differential pressure sensor (with DPF system)

  1. Connect CMP sensor 3P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.

  1. Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the CMP sensor and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1, No. 3 or No. 5, then go to Step 20 .
NO -
Go to Step 12 .

  1. Connect IMRC position sensor 3P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.

  1. Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the IMRC position sensor and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1, No. 3 or No. 5, then go to Step 20 .
NO -
Go to Step 14 .

  1. Connect output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor 3P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.

  1. Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1, No. 3 or No. 5, then go to Step 20 .
NO -
Go to Step 16 .

  1. Connect A/C pressure sensor 3P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.

  1. Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the A/C pressure sensor and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1, No. 3 or No. 5, then go to Step 20 .
NO -

  1. Connect DPF differential pressure sensor 3P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.

  1. Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the DPF differential pressure sensor and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 1, No. 3 or No. 5, then go to Step 20 .
NO -
Go to Step 24 .
  1. Reconnect all connectors.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Reset the ECM with the HDS.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0653 indicated?
YES -
Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the CMP sensor, the IMRC position sensor, the A/C pressure sensor, the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor, the DPF differential pressure sensor (with DPF system), and the ECM, then go to Step 1 .
NO -
Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.■
  1. Reconnect all connectors.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0653 indicated?
YES -
Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the CMP sensor, the IMRC position sensor, the A/C pressure sensor, the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor, the DPF differential pressure sensor (with DPF system), and the ECM. If the ECM was updated, substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the ECM was substituted, go to Step 1 .
NO -
If the ECM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the ECM was substituted, replace the original ECM. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.■
