DTC Troubleshooting: P0351 (71), P0352 (72), P0353 (73), P0354 (74)

DTC P0351:
 No. 1 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0352:
 No. 2 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0353:
 No. 3 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0354:
 No. 4 Cylinder Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction
NOTE: Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  1. Start the engine.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353 and/or P0354 indicated?
YES -
Go to Step 5 .
NO -
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil and the ECM.■
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Exchange the ignition coil from the problem cylinder with one from another cylinder.
  1. Start the engine.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC indicated at the exchanged cylinder position?
YES -
NO -
Go to Step 9 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Check the No. 14 IG (15 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box.
Is the fuse OK?
YES -
Go to Step 11 .
NO -
Go to Step 12 .
Is the ignition coil relay OK?
YES -
Go to Step 15 .
NO -
  1. Disconnect all ignition coil 3P connectors.
  1. Check for continuity between No. 1 ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 3 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the ignition coils and the under-hood fuse/relay box. Also replace the No. 14 IG (15 A) fuse, then go to Step 25 .
NO -
  1. Reconnect the under-hood fuse/relay box 20P (white) connector.
  1. Disconnect the ignition coil 3P connector from the problem cylinder.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

  1. Measure voltage between ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 3 of the problem cylinder and body ground (see table).

Is there battery voltage?
YES -
Go to Step 19 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the ignition coil and the ignition coil relay, then go to Step 25 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

  1. Check for continuity between ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 2 of the problem cylinder and body ground (see table).

Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to Step 21 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the ignition coil and G101, then go to Step 25 .
  1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  1. Disconnect ECM connector C (44P).

  1. Check for continuity between body ground and the appropriate ECM connector terminal of the problem cylinder (see table).

Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short in the wire between the ECM and the ignition coil, then go to Step 25 .
NO -
Go to Step 24 .

  1. Check for continuity between appropriate ignition coil 3P connector terminal No. 1 and the appropriate ECM connector terminal of the problem cylinder (see table).

Is there continuity?
YES -
Go to Step 31 .
NO -
Repair open in the wire between the ECM and the ignition coil, then go to Step 25 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Reconnect all connectors and the battery.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  1. Reset the ECM with the HDS.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, and/or P0354 indicated?
YES -
Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil, the under-hood fuse/relay box, and the ECM, then go to Step 1 .
NO -
Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.■
  1. Reconnect all connectors.
  1. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, and/or P0354 indicated?
YES -
Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil, the under-hood fuse/relay box, and the ECM. If the ECM was updated, substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the ECM was substituted, go to Step 1 .
NO -
If the ECM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the ECM was substituted, replace the original ECM. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.■
